Space is limited for a small and interactive group

Hello and thank you for being here and for considering the You and Your Dog As Equals program . This program is designed just for us people who think of our dogs as being no different than us.

Of course there are some obvious differences, like body type and overall hairiness and the desire to smell and often eat pooh. But you are in the right place if you think of your dog as having mental and emotional experiences and perceptions a lot like you. Even more so if you see yourself and your dog both as spiritual beings.

This is the perspective we approach our dogs from. Making sure they have the chance to process and think and come to their own agreements and decisions about what we are asking them to do. Letting it be a conversation that isn’t manipulated by the artificial pressure of positive or negative reinforcement. Knowing they need to understand it fully before they can commit to it.

The shamanic dog training lessons and principles guide you with simplicity and practicality through this process.

You don’t need any previous knowledge or experience – just a willingness to meet your dog where they are. So that in return they are willing to meet you in that same place.

If this feels right for you, I whole heartedly invite you to join the program. I hope to see you there!

Warmly,
Tamryn Fudge
~ founder and teacher of shamanic dog training

What makes Shamanic Dog Training different?

We work on relationship as much as skill building

Your relationship with your dog is the biggest reason you either enjoy living with each other or you don't. It isn't as much about the actual problems you encounter - because they will always be there, to some extent or another. But it's how you face the problems together that makes it easier or not.

We work with awareness and acceptance of the changing and unpredictable nature of life

We don't try to secure control or guaranteed outcomes. We acknowledge that everything can change at any moment and we prepare ourselves for this inevitability. We equip ourselves with the tools and skills that are helpful for adapting to ever changing circumstances.

Our dogs are seen and treated as equals

We do not work on the dominance model. We allow our dogs to be equal partners with us. Their experience and feelings and perceptions carry just as much importance as ours.

We teach with no positive or negative reinforcement

When we don't use the artificial pressure of positive reinforcement (cookies, toys) or negative reinforcement (corrections, rejection), our dogs are free to think for themselves. It is very important in shamanic dog training for our dogs to make their own decisions and choices.

Blue Sky and Micky

"I found it more to be a kind of Shamanic Relationship Training, and as much for me, as for Blue Sky.

It has helped me to trust the language of my heart and my intuition, and to realize that, as it turns out, this is the same language that Blue speaks.

It teaches a different perspective , and that is, as Tamryn put it, “learning how to BE is different than learning how to DO.”

Learning how to ‘be’ involves internal motivation, and acting in a way that pleases the learner, from within. Learning how to ‘do’ involves external motivation, such as commands and treats.

Blue and I have attended many classes where the emphasis was on the ‘do’ part. In Tamryn’s classes, learning how to ‘be’, was refreshing, inspiring, and so affirming to what I already felt in my heart!

This is so much more than 16 weeks of classes. For us, this is forever!"

Shamanic Dog Training has 2 equally important parts

Shamanic Dog Training teaches you and your dog what to do together and how to be with each other:

What to

DO

with each

other

DOING: The Body of Technique

The skills you both need to develop in order to function easily in the world together:

  • Calming tools
  • Equipment and gear
  • Life Skills
  • Emergency skills
  • Worse case scenario plans

How to

BE

with each

other

BEING: The Body of Knowledge

The way of interacting with each other that supports your relationship:

  • The 5 Freedoms
  • Shamanic Principles
  • Connecting
  • Speaking
  • Understanding

Simple and practical:

Learning step by step

1

Week 1 to 4 - Essentials and Foundation

This is where it all starts. During our first few weeks together we are focused on understanding and connecting with our dogs. We are creating the foundation that everything is built upon.

Lessons and teachings for this section include:

  • Calming Exercises - for times when everything is going too fast or you really need to get through to your dog. Particularly when they aren't responding or don't even notice you exist.
  • Hard Boundary - teaching your dog not to leave the house or the yard or the vehicle (or sidewalk, boat, etc.) without permission.  They learn it to do it all by themselves - without needing to be told or asked!
  • Gear & Equipment - we go over the most helpful gear for your dog. This is one of the most impactful changes you can make with your dog. Choosing and fitting the right equipment makes a surprising difference.
  • Emergency Recall - this could be one of the most useful things you learn in the program. Something so simple but so effective can give you the confidence to start doing the things you've always wanted with your dog.

2

Week 5 to 8 - Life Skills Part 1

We start with the essential 5 Life Skills that will build your body of technique. We pair that with shamanic principles to help you and your dog deepen your relationship. You and your dog will start to feel like you are really working together as a pair.

Lessons and teachings for this section include:

  • Leashwork - teaching your dog not to pull on the leash so that they are responsible and aware of the amount of pressure they are putting on the leash. It is something learn to do all by themselves - no "heel" command!
  • Recall - there are many ways to get your dog to you. Each situation may need a different approach, depending on what's happening. You will learn multiple ways to get your dog back to you when you need it.
  • Unconditional Love - this principle is about never withholding love or rejecting your dog (or yourself) with shame or guilt. It teaches to trust in the basic goodness in everything, even when things are going wrong.
  • Right Relationship - you are not more important than your dog, and your dog is not more important than you. You each have equal consideration. You trust each other to make equal effort in the relationship.

3

Week 9 to 12 - Life Skills Part 2

Now things are starting to come together. You and your dog are building a new framework for communicating and understanding each other. You are drawing more support from the skills and principles you have been learning together.

Lessons and teachings for this section include:

  • Manners - teaching your dog to be aware of their interactions with others and how they affect them. You will learn lessons for manners with people, noise, toys and food.  And also the 5th bonus manners: other dogs.
  • Speaking - it is important to tell your dog, with words, about every aspect of daily life that affects them. Learn how to speak more to your dog and understand which details are the most important to share.
  • Fluidity - developing that ability to adapt easily to situations as they change or if they are different from what you expected. You become less frustrated when you can see more options available to you.
  • STOP - your dog will learn that when you say the word, they need to stop and freeze in place. And they have to stay right there can't move from that spot until you give them the "okay".

4

Week 13 to 16 - Putting It All Together

By this point, you are mastering the tools and skills. The principles and teachings are easy to use and feel natural to implement. Now is the time to take things a little further and see how more is possible.

Lessons and teachings include:

  • Skills Review - its time to look back and gather all the pieces that you have been gathering. You will see you have built a huge assortment of tools and expertise to draw from.
  • Dynamic Equilibrium - as you continue forward, the amount of support your dog needs from you will shift and vary in different circumstances. Learn how to notice when they need it and how much they need.
  • Advanced Combinations - the tools and skills you've learned are meant to be used together. They can be used together and combined to create the safety and trust so you can do more of the things you've always wanted.
  • Worse Case Scenarios - knowing how to handle the things that might scare you the most is a key to having the confidence to get out there with your dog. You'll learn how to feel prepared, even if it scares you.

About Tamryn

Tamryn Fudge has been teaching and living with dogs for over 25 years. She is thrilled to share her experience and this way of shamanic dog training with you.

Tamryn is the founder of shamanic dog training. She developed it because she couldn’t find any other models for living with dogs the way she wanted, and knew in her heart was possible. She was looking for a way to eliminate the separation between dogs and people –so that they are equals.

Now that she has been able to make her dream a reality, she is overjoyed to share her findings with other people. So many other people have been wishing for the same thing and Tamryn is helping them achieve it for themselves.

Bear (right) with housemate Nibbles

Bear and Ashley

"I just wanted to thank Tamryn for her incredible insight and support throughout the Shamanic Dog Training course.

I adopted Bear in July 2020 and she was unlike any dog I’d ever had before - I thought I knew a lot about dogs and could handle most things but Bear (and Tamryn!) came to teach me a whole new way of working and being with them.

When everything I’d learned over the years about positive reinforcement and being the “leader” of your dog failed to work with Bear, I felt like I was in way over my head and knew I had to find help and a different approach to “dog training” and thank goodness I found Tamryn!

Tamryn was amazing to connect with right from the start. Her approach and energy just felt like the right match for us and I was hopeful her methods in working with dogs would help us.

And this is where I say a huge thank you because she ended up helping us even more than I ever could have imagined.

I should probably say that Bear still isn’t the easiest dog ever but I can say that I know how to relate and interact with her in a manner than makes both of our lives so much easier.

Most importantly I learned that I was withholding love and trust. Two very important factors in our relationship...

The Essential 5 Life Skills

These skills make it possible to do all the things we really want to with our dogs, even if challenges still present themselves. Much more flexible and functional than obedience skills, they are simple and practical and easy to teach.

Come when called

You will learn multiple approaches to getting your dog to come back to you and keeping them safe. We don't teach the formal "come" command - instead, you will how to stay connected and close to your dog in every circumstance. Including an emergency recall for moments when you really need your dog fast.

Don't leave the house or the yard or vehicle without permission

If your dog can remain in the house or yard or vehicle until you give the "okay" all clear, would that make you trust things more? It is so easy to do, and the best part is your dog is going to learn to do it all by themselves - without you telling them anything.

Don't pull on the leash

This is different than "heel". Your dog is not going to have to walk right beside you - which is really boring for the both of you. Instead, they can walk behind or in front or beside. As long as they're not pulling you. This is another one for intrinsic teaching, where they learn how to do it all by themselves without ever having to be told.

STOP on command

This is one of the best emergency tools you can have. It is a useful alternative to having your dog come all the way back to you - because they just have to stop and freeze in place where they are until you give the "okay". It makes so many things more safe and easy.

manners

Manners is teaching your dog to be aware of how they interact with others and their affect on them. The 4 Manners Agreements are: toys manners, people manners, noise manners and food manners. And a 5th bonus manners - interactions other dogs. They learn to do it by themselves, which makes them more trustworthy and easy to integrate into all kinds of situations.

Trooper and Kristy

Trooper is a new addition to our family and he was stressed. We needed help to learn him and his cues and how to make him more comfortable. Plus he has some challenging behaviour – barking, nipping, anxiety, over reactivity.

Learning his signals was key. And us being receptive to those signals has given him better ones! He shows many signs of being overwhelmed and stressed. And he doesn’t think when in this state. Getting him calmer and allowing him to do his own calming has worked well. Also giving him the opportunity to learn boundaries. He is a smart little guy!

I had heard that he didn’t respond at all well to being dominated. He will fight it and it perpetuates his fears. So understanding him has been a better approach...

Here's what people are saying about the online classes:

I think the class portal was a phenomenal tool. Very easy to use. I loved having access to the recorded classes to re-watch and the extra [tutorial] videos.”

~ Anne K with Sophie, Australian shepherd

“It includes power point slides to explain the concepts, video examples, tutorials, ample live discussion with other class members, practice sessions, reviews, dedicated Q & A sessions. resources to helpful equipment. etc. and more. Each class builds on the last session so as not to get overwhelmed.

And online access to all of the above is available to me whenever I need a review, along with continual support from all the participants as we post comments, questions and videos of our progress.”

~ Judy L with Ruedi, Bernese mountain dog

Marty and Diane & Rachel

"From my own perspective, two standouts from the shamanic philosophy are emphasis on relationship above all and letting go of prevalent beliefs about how dogs should be, as well as addressing those beliefs when interacting with others.

An ongoing self-reminder that conflict is a natural process that leads to growth is very helpful with a puppy as well! In balanced relationship there's mutuality - we want the best for each other and for ourselves, and that becomes clearer as our time with Marty continues.

Much of the value in the classes is not just what it introduces but also that it underscores many of the beliefs that led us here. Marty would be loved and valued whichever classes we chose, but I believe he will be more contented, fulfilled and happy as a result of Tamryn's wonderful classes.

We can see how Marty is more able to (somewhat!) respond with increased attentiveness at learning times…

Who this program IS for:

  • People who want their dogs to be seen and heard and supported for who they are
  • People who want their dogs to be seen and treated as equals in the relationship
  • People willing to do just as much as their dogs to be in right relationship with each other
  • People who want more freedom and less control for their dog

Who this program is NOT for

  • People who are only looking for obedience commands
  • People who don’t want to put in as much effort or work as hard as their dog
  • People who only want control of their dogs
  • People who want a certain outcome to be achieved – no matter what

Ruedi and Judy

"Shamanic Dog Training and in particular the online program has been a game-changer for us. Tamryn’s intelligent, experienced, compassionate approach to building a relationship with our dogs focusses on essential principles and a few simple tools to create a mutually cooperative lifestyle that is not only loving, but respectful and inclusive. Ruedi and I are having so much fun together now, with minimal frustration.

I wasn’t sure how effective online dog training was going to be for someone in a different province without in-person help. But my initial concerns were unwarranted. Tamryn has prepared a well-organized and comprehensive program online that can work for anyone anywhere."

~ Judy L., Woseley Saskatchewan

Fraser and Stephanie

"All of it is especially meaningful when an inclusive lifestyle is important. Such as being prepared and having a plan for a worst case scenario, letting go of being judged by others, trusting my own wisdom, giving and receiving unconditional love, listening and recognizing stress in my dog, paying attention to calming signals, creating hard boundaries, practicing recall.

It isn’t demanding obedience, some of the best moments didn’t even include talking, it was just showing and creating meaning so my dog could think and understand for himself.

Yesterday Fraser gently touched my leg and then ‘showed’ me what he wanted. What a clear, kind and respectful way to ask for something! How lovely to know just what he wanted!

Then I thought, Oh my gosh, he’s using the Shamanic training on me!"

~ Stephanie Z., Anglemont BC

The 5 Life Skills

Everything you and your dog need

With the 5 Life Skills, you will be able to handle any situation.
They are practical and simple to teach. They are even easier for your dog to learn, because they are designed to make complete sense to your dog.

Come when Called

Keeping your dog close and connected to you is one of our main priorities. You will feel more confident right from the start. Learn multiple recall tools, including an emergency recall.

Don't Pull on The Leash

When your dog pulls on the leash it can sometimes ruin the walk. Your dog will learn to monitor the pressure they put on the leash - all by themselves. When your dog is easier on the leash, you want to do more things together.

manners: be polite in social situations

There are 4 Manners Agreements in shamanic dog training. Noise manners, play manners, food manners and people manners. Plus the bonus manners: other dogs.  Teach your dog to handle more situations with manners.

STOP! ON COMMAND

Your dog will learn to freeze in place when you say the word. The safety and trust this creates can be a game changer. It is a simple tool that dogs learn very quickly and easily.

DON'T LEAVE THE HOUSE OR YARD OR VEHICLE WITHOUT PERMISSION

Your dog remains inside the house or yard or vehicle until you check the coast is clear and give the okay. It means more safety and freedom during everyday moments. Your dog can be included and trusted in more circumstances.

Meet Tamryn Fudge

Tamryn Fudge is the founder and teacher of shamanic dog training. She incorporates animal communication and shamanic principles with 25 years of dog training.

I've spent my lifetime getting closer to dogs. I've explored almost everything you can do with a dog. From agility to flyball and tracking. Therapy dog work and volunteer dog walking at shelters. Foster caring and pet sitting. My goal was to spend as much time as possible with dogs.

I owned 2 dog daycares and ran group classes for over a decade. I have always specialized in aggression and behaviour problems, offering private sessions to clients who need help with challenges.

I added animal communication and shamanic principles as I learned more about the depths of our connection with animals and nature. I love knowing that we are a part of creation and our dogs are our brothers and sisters.

These are the principles I love to share the most - that our dogs are our universal family. The more I learn about them, the less I want to boss them around. The more I want to hear what they have to say and learn their wisdom and gifts.

Frequently asked questions

What if I can’t attend all of the LIVE sessions?

Please ensure that you can attend all the LIVE sessions prior to enrolling in the program. It works best if everyone is there and committed for each class. That being said, sometimes emergencies and unavoidable circumstances come up. If you can't attend a session, please let us know and the replay will absolutely be available.

We would love to have you in the program. Please review the class dates and make sure they all work for you before deciding to enroll in the program.

NOTE: if the class dates don't work for your schedule, you can be notified when the next group session starts. And when the self-paced program for individual study is released. To be notified when the next group program is available (and self-paced programs too), click here.

I have a dog with complex issues. Will this program be helpful for that?

This is a comprehensive training program that will give you all the tools for working with your dog's complex issues. If you feel you need help applying the lessons and teachings to your unique situation, there is plenty of opportunity to receive direction from Tamryn Fudge, your instructor. Options for extra help include:

  • Questions in class - there will be time for discussion during our live classes. You can ask your questions then and get answers in real time.
  • Questions outside of class - there are a number of ways you can get in contact with your instructor, Tamryn Fudge, outside of class hours. This includes comments and replies in the online course area and direct emails to Tamryn.
  • Strategy Sessions with Tamryn - when you enroll in the program, you get exclusive access to strategy sessions with Tamryn. These are only available to clients who are already enrolled in programs. It is a one-on-one session with Tamryn where the focus is only on you and your dog. As a member of the group program you receive a discount on your first strategy session.
  • Shamanic Reading with Tamryn - you can get your questions answered directly by your dog. During a shamanic reading, you get to hear exactly what your dog is saying in response to your questions. You get to hear their questions and what they want you to know. It is an opportunity to understand each other better. When you enroll in the program you receive a discount on your shamanic reading when you make the booking.

I have a puppy. How old does my dog need to be to join the program?

It works well if your dog is 5 months or older. However, if your dog is younger than 5 months the program will still be helpful for you. You might need to ask a few extra questions about the stages your puppy is going through. Such as chewing and biting and house training, etc.

If you start this program with your young puppy, you will be well prepared to guide your puppy through their development. Although you will still be going through all of the phases together, which are sometimes difficult, you will have so many tools to help and support you.

I don't have any experience with shamanic dog training. Can I still join this program?

This program is designed to take you through shamanic dog training from start to finish. You don't need any prior experience to join. The lessons and teachings are simple and practical and you will be guided step by step through the process.

Still have questions?

If you have questions about the program or the schedule or the content or the methods, you can contact Tamryn Fudge. She's your instructor. You can schedule a call with her to discuss your particular questions and situation.

What this program DOES:

  • It approaches your dog as a fully conscious being – with physical, emotional, mental and spiritual experiences
  • It helps you and your dog understand each other more
  • It tends to the friendship and relationship you share with your dog
  • It equips you with multiple tools and skills that are suitable and practical for everyday life and real situations

What this program DOESN'T do:

  • It doesn’t use positive reinforcement (cookies, toys) or negative reinforcement (correction, rejection)
  • It doesn’t focus on controlling your dog and telling them what to do all the time
  • It doesn’t teach obedience commands like sit, stay, come, heel and down
  • It doesn’t tell you not to listen to yourself and your own wisdom/intuition about yourself and your life with your dog

Duma and Kim

"We had a lot of challenges before the class with leash pulling, over-excited encounters with other dogs (ie. Duma screaming) and sometimes avoiding bringing Duma out because of the potentially stressful situations. Since then all of these things have improved.

We still experience some pulling on the leash and definitely some Duma screams. I think the thing that’s changed the most is my approach to those situations. I feel like I can meet her where she’s at more instead of getting upset.

I think there’s still definitely work to do, but I’m not attached to perfection anymore. I’m realizing that these things take time and commitment."

This is Sophie

“The most important thing I got from the class was the whole new mind set of interacting with Sophie. Intrinsic learning for Sophie. The five freedoms and the goals how to get there with Sophie.”

This is Shanti

“My lil gal and I were dealing with how to best “train” her overactive reactivity and impulsivity.

The best realization was that it’s not about training these behaviors out of her it’s about she and I working in tandem to support her ability and mine to create a calm state for each other. It’s also not about limiting her experiences until she’s “trained” but about being open to creating opportunity for more growth through broadening her experiences.

This work was different in that other professionals kept emphasizing the sit, down, heel etc or muzzle use but through this work I realize those are management tools not tools that always promote growth. The other aspect is the encouragement to realize that every dog should have the opportunity to enjoy varied experiences with as much freedom as possible with safeguards if needed.

This course was a fabulous reminder of the partnership we can have with our animal companions and that this work is not about managing behavior but about holding space so we are learning our own deep lessons as we help our animal companions learn to navigate our human world.

I would highly recommend this course! I would encourage anyone considering the course to be open to learn and grow in their role as a human companion.”
~ Nora V (Colorado, USA)

This is Trooper

“Trooper is a new addition to our family and he was stressed.

Getting him distracted, calmer and allowing him to do his own calming has worked well. Also giving him the opportunity to learn boundaries. He is a smart little guy!

We didn’t {try other training before] but I had heard that he didn’t respond at all well to being dominated. He will fight it and it perpetuates his fears. So understanding him has been a better approach.

We have modified how we work with him. We respect his space and communicate with him a lot. Brainstorming with the group helped with ideas for his unique issues. He is quite good on a leash and loves the long line when we can get out for more space. We have built trust and he calms down much quicker than before.

If you want to know your dog and really bring them in to your family, plus give them an enriched life where all the family can be happy together, then Shamanic training is an awesome way to work with your pet. You will also help your pet to cope with their emotions and learn to respect the family rules. “

This is Ruedi

"I found it difficult to find the right approach to deal with Ruedi’s constant pulling on a leash, barking at me when he didn’t get his way, jumping up on the bed while trying to make it, and pushing me down the stairs to be first, as just a few examples of my growing rambunctious canine teenager’s frustrating behaviours.

Shamanic Dog Training and in particular the online program has been a game-changer for us.

I can’t thank Tamryn enough for helping me to help Ruedi grow and become the best that we can be together as a family with Shamanic Dog Training!"
