Hard Boundaries: Stepping farther from your dog

In this video: Grace takes multiple steps away from Daisy while teaching hard boundary at the gate to the yard.

Hard Boundary – Stepping Farther Away

Your dog should hold their hard boundary no matter where you are or what you are doing. Stepping farther away during a lesson gets your dog ready for being alone at the hard boundary while you are not there.

Recommended Equipment:

  • Collar
  • Long Line

You will need enough length to reach between you and your dog when you move more steps away. A long line ensures safety in this challenging lesson.

Instructions:

1. Teach the basic lesson until it feels solid before practicing this advanced lesson.

2. Use the long line to ensure safety while you and your dog are farther apart during this lesson.

3. Once your dog is holding the basic boundary, walk a short distance. Keep slack in the long line so your dog doesn’t get pulled as you walk away.

4. If they step over the boundary, go back and push or pull them back inside the boundary. Do not speak to them.

5. Wait until they are holding the boundary and walk away again. Keep slack in the long line so they don’t get pulled as you walk away.

6. If your dog steps over the boundary, go back and push or pull them back inside the boundary. Do not speak to them.

7. Repeat the above steps until you can walk away and your dog holds the hard boundary.

8. Once your dog is holding the boundary release them with “okay!”.
